The Position

Working in the Sales department and reporting to the Director of Sales, the Sales Manager is charged with the primary responsibility of generating qualified sport event leads and converting them to definite business by identifying, developing, targeting and securing the hosting rights for events with a broad range of tourism related benefits to the city of Calgary and area. The Manager will provide assistance on the development and coordination of working bid committees and leading proactive bids. Building strong relationships with clients, colleagues, members and partners will be instrumental to the success of this position and achieving success in increasing the capacity and competitiveness of Calgary to host sport and major events. In this role within the tourism community, the manager will act as a conduit between Tourism Calgary and the Sport community for the benefit of both.

Key Responsibilities

  • Generate qualified sport event leads and convert them to definite business. Achieving pre-set targets for the market segment in contracted hotel room nights / seasonality distribution / media coverage / legacy impacts
  • Lead the development and execution of sport event bid packages through the coordination of working bid committees and participation on select host committees
  • Attendance at an annual sport event conference and marketplace and other possible sales related travel
  • Build community capacity through the development of event champions by providing various services, including: bid support, site inspections, accommodations and facilities coordination, funding assistance (event bidding & hosting grant program), and event planning and promotion tools and services
  • Keep informed on worldwide competition in terms of sales, marketing, operation and trends of the sport tourism business
  • Attendance at Tourism Calgary, CSTA and other various client functions and events
  • Hosting clients on familiarization tours for the purpose of business development, and at stakeholder initiated functions
  • Collaborate with all Tourism Calgary departments to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization
  • Provide support and guidance to the Assistant, Sport & Major Events

Qualifications

  • Post-Secondary education in Tourism, Hotel & Resort Management, Business or equivalent
  • Knowledge of the tourism and hospitality industry; specifically sales and client management (prior hotel sales experience considered an asset)
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving aptitude with the ability to work well independently
  • Strong time and project management expertise with an ability to prioritize, meet and maintain deadlines  Proficiency in communicating with an acute attention to detail
  • Must excel as a member of a team or group
  • Must be computer literate; strong knowledge of database management, Microsoft office; experienced Internet user
