Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President, Finance and Corporate Operations, the Director, People and Culture (HR) develops, leads and executes effective and innovative people strategy and a corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy that align with organizational objectives and the needs of our valued team.

The Director of People and Culture role is equal parts strategy and execution, and you are the kind of person who is comfortable operating across a broad spectrum of activity – in short, you are energized as much by strategy as you are by hands-on work. This role is viewed as a leader across the organization who is vital to the continued success and recognition of Travel Alberta as a preferred workplace. 

Responsibilities

This position is an integral partner in setting the strategic and tactical direction of the organization inclusive but not limited to the activities listed below:

  • You possess a deep understanding of the development, implementation and evaluation of effective corporate social responsibility programs as they relate to organizational values and objectives
  • You love people and people love you. You are proactive in getting to know the Travel Alberta team, you are demonstrably empathetic and highly approachable to anyone in a genuine and sincere manner.
  • You lead by connecting our people with the vision of Travel Alberta and developing short-term and long-term People and Culture and CSR initiatives that align with our corporate strategy and nurture the business strategy including organizational excellence 
  • You know how to qualify and quantify results as they relate to tactical, strategic and organizational goals and objectives, and you are committed to providing accurate and meaningful reporting results
  • Mentor, lead and develop a team of two through clearly communicated expectations; performance recognition; team member development; and an emphasis on developmental opportunities
  • Provide strategic (goal-based), operational (process-based) and tactical (task or procedure based) people management and engagement direction to Travel Alberta in accordance with the business strategies 
  • Assess the existing People and Culture (HR) policies, practices, strategies, programs, and initiatives to ensure strategic alignment and to find improvements and efficiencies
  • Translate legislative requirements into actions, policies and education needed to comply and deliver on business strategy, and bring a general understanding of union/ non-union environments 
  • Assess and make recommendations on competencies and organizational design 
  • Evolve performance management policy and procedure 
  • Lead the award strategy as it relates to demonstrating the Travel Alberta team commitment to organizational excellence, and as it relates to recognition programs and policy
  • Oversee and advise on matters related to compensation and classification, compliance, governance, legislation, union and non-union relations and conflict resolution

Education and Experience

  • University degree, with Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation
  • A minimum of 10 years of leadership experience in human resources, culture and team engagement 
  • A minimum of five years of experience working with executive leaders and supporting board members; specifically, human resources governance committee members
  • Knowledge of human resources, culture and engagement theory, concepts, and best practices
  • Experience working in a unionized environment and representing an employer at collective bargaining is an asset

This position is based in Calgary, Alberta.
