The Calgary TELUS Convention Centre hosts conventions, tradeshows and meetings for national, international and local groups.  We are currently looking to fill a full time position of BUILDING OPERATOR.

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, this position is involved in the operation and maintenance of the utility plants and buildings and providing excellent customer service to clients, guests and staff in a timely and professional manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Functional checks of mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems
  • Equipment checks and making adjustments where required to maintain parameters
  • Maintaining and operating the building automation system
  • Conducting water analysis and chemical treatment of open and closed systems
  • Lighting, door and washroom checks and repairs
  • Taking monthly inventory of chemical and lighting stock and ordering stock to replenish supply
  • Water meter checks and backup humidity and power meter consumption files
  • Preventative maintenance and breakdown maintenance of equipment including complete teardown and inspection of all boilers, chillers, fan units, unit heaters and alarm systems
  • Assisting external contractors as required, ensuring that standards, and policies and procedures are met
  • General housekeeping and maintenance of engineering and mechanical areas
  • Assisting the Electrician with repairs to the electrical system and with tradeshow booth setup involving delivery and setup of electrical cords and panels and removing and ensuring proper storage of same
  • Installing and disconnecting water and compressed air services
  • Maintaining the sprinkler systems and fire alarm monitoring system
  • Repairing and maintaining kitchen equipment (i.e. stoves, dishwashers, steamers etc.)
  • Shut-down of utilities and emergency equipment services
  • Responding to plumbing concerns and performing the necessary repairs
  • Making arrangements for elevator and escalator repairs and maintenance
  • Replacing burned out lights and changing filters in fan systems
  • Preventative maintenance and teardown of equipment
  • Performing drain treatments in washrooms
  • Responding to client service calls and assisting other departments when required

Experience and Assets:  

  • Must possess a valid Province of Alberta Power Engineer 4th Class Certificate of Competency or higher
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working as a Building Operator
  • Knowledge and experience in the operation of building management systems
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, including pumps, motors, boilers, chillers, cooling towers and air handling equipment
  • Excellent communication (oral and written English), interpersonal  and problem solving skills and a mechanical aptitude
  • Experience with the Powers 600 System would be a definite asset
  • Customer service focused with the ability to work and perform independently and in a team oriented environment
  • Ability to maintain a good working relationship with other buildings sharing equipment and services
  • Ability to work and communicate with in-house partners, clients, guests, contractors and staff and handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Physically fit to have the ability to lift heavy weight and be comfortable working with heights
  • Knowledge, experience and certification of fork and scissor lift operations would be a definite asset
  • Availability to work shift work, weekends and holidays and perform on-call services on a rotating basis
