Position Summary
The Manager, Receptive Tour Operator (RTO) Development supports the marketing of Alberta as a tourism destination by growing the product and knowledge of experiences and itineraries that the RTOs package and sell to international markets. This role is an integral part of the tourism distribution system to grow supply of Alberta’s experiences and itineraries being sold by international wholesalers to international travelers.

This position reports directly to the Director, Business Development, Asia and is responsible for supporting Travel Alberta’s strategic objectives to strengthen Alberta’s competitive position and grow tourism revenues.

Strategic Accountabilities
  • Growing and strengthening the globally distribution of product and experiences. 
  • Project management and execution of RTO Development plans and budget Increase the quantity and quality of Alberta market and export-ready experiences 
  • Cultivate and nurture collaborative relations with key enterprise stakeholders (Industry Partners and Global Clients)

Position Responsibilities
Leadership
  • Lead by articulating the vision of Travel Alberta and defining short and long term business development strategies to grow revenue and visitation to Alberta from Receptive Tour Operators (RTOs).
  • Establish and strengthen RTO relationships and business opportunities in alignment with Travel Alberta’s strategic objectives.
  • Elevate the profile of Business Development activities to diversify the economy and drive tourism revenue and growth. 
  • Maintain positive communication and collaboration within the Business Development Team, and across lines of business, to maximize opportunities, resolve issues, and support a high performance culture at Travel Alberta.
RTO Development Strategy
  • Lead and execute business development programs to increase supply of Alberta’s tourism experiences that RTOs and DMCs are packaging and selling to international tour operators and meeting and incentive planners.
  • Research and maintain knowledge of current and relevant RTOs and DMCs in all markets.
  • Maintain knowledge of current market conditions, trends and intelligence from RTOs, which provide broader insights on key markets and growth opportunities for Canada and Alberta.
  • Collaborate with Experience Development and Industry Development to facilitate the development of tourism products that enable growth within need periods and need areas, and provide key experience drivers to grow marketshare in international markets. 
  • Influence and collaborate with RTOs to increase supply and distribution of the Alberta product and itinerary offerings available, and increase demand of Alberta experiences to support growth priorities.
  • Represent Travel Alberta at tradeshows, marketplaces, associations and conferences, as relevant, to meet with RTOs and strengthen business relationships.
  • Develop an RTO Strategy for China.
  • Plan and lead Business Development trips for RTOs and DMCs.
  • Develop an education strategy for RTOs in collaboration with clients and Team Alberta, and execute TA-led training missions
  • Develop an ATIS strategy for local RTOs.
  • Support RTOs with translation, itineraries, itinerary development, industry information, training and development of product offering for Alberta
  • Communicate updates on Travel Alberta’s market strategy, insights on Team Alberta, and opportunities for business development to the RTOs. 
  • Identify and communicate product and service gaps and or opportunities by market that can be addressed by Travel Alberta and Team Alberta.
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Act as a liaison for Alberta industry partners interested in working in international markets to develop and effectively manage relationships with RTOs.
  • Share insights and relevant updates with regard to RTOs and markets with Travel Alberta Team Members, In-Market Representatives, Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) and small to medium Alberta based enterprises (SME’s).
  • Maintain and proactively distribute information and product knowledge on Alberta’s tourism products and services to RTOs.
  • Provide support to Experience Development and new experience providers.
  • Work with the Alberta Tourism Government in support of national and international interest related to new experience development and investment in Alberta.
Financial Management
  • Develop and manage project files and working budgets to ensure project objectives are achieved.
  • Forecast expenditures and work with Finance Coordinator(s), for reconciliation of expenses and payment of invoices related to RTO Development.
  • Lead the development and/or review of PASs, partnering agreements, contracts, purchase agreements, product development trips, and project evaluations to meet Travel Alberta’s financial requirements in relation to RTO Development.
Reporting / Performance
  • Establish and maintain performance tracking platform to monitor RTO product, trends, itineraries, pax numbers and growth to Alberta.
  • Conduct an annual survey to evaluate product growth, distribution and supply.
  • Track results generated from product development trips to monitor growth and Travel Alberta’s return on investment.
  • Maintain RTO database and key information in CRM.
  • Contribute client and market insights to internal reporting and external reports to stakeholders and shareholders including MD&A, MIR, briefing notes and presentations.
Special Projects
  • Responsible for special projects and other duties as assigned by the Directors, Business Development, the Vice President Business Development, and/or executive team.
  • Support collaboration and cover Managers and Specialists in Business Development Team and Director, Business Development, Asia as required 
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or certificate in Business or related field with a focus on marketing
  • Minimum of 5 year progressive tourism industry experience with a focus in business development/sales or marketing.
Additional Requirements
  • Prior Manager/management level experience.
  • International tourism marketing experience. Experience working at a Provincial Marketing Organization or Tour Company an asset.
  • Experience working in business development and fostering relations with travel trade and MICE. Prior work with RTOs and DMCs an asset.

  • Ability to speak or read German, Mandarin, Japanese or Korean considered an asset

Employment status: Maternity Leave Term (Approximately 12-14 months)
