Heritage Park Historical Village announces 50th anniversary events

An exciting line-up of special events in celebration of Heritage Park’s 50th anniversary summer season has been unveiled. New all-inclusive pricing, two new exhibits, a Heritage Day concert and Canada Day fireworks are just part of what is to come over the next couple of months.

Once through the Park gates, visitors young, and young at heart will enjoy a brand new Kinsmen Club of Calgary playground. The new train themed structure features five slides, a clubhouse and activity panels, and is partially wheelchair accessible. The Kinsmen helped fund and build the playground.

Thanks to a partnership with GlobalFest, Engineered Air and Nexen, a CNOOC Limited Company, the day will include a complimentary pancake breakfast, mini-chuckwagon races, citizenship ceremony and a Heritage Quest Challenge where pre-registered teams compete in a series of physical, mental and skill-based challenges, reliving “How the West Was Once”. The Park will stay open during the evening and offer cultural entertainment, a licensed barbeque tent, and two spectacular fireworks shows. All the activities, evening entertainment and fireworks are included with regular park admission.

A special concert announcement revealed an exciting line up of musical entertainment for Heritage Day at the Park on Monday, August 4. Thanks to support from Husky Energy, on top of regular activities, visitors will enjoy family friendly concerts throughout the day with Juno award winning children’s performer, Al Simmons, Calgary’s own Jocelyn and Lisa, and folk artist, Maria Dunn. The Park will close at 5 p.m., and re-open at 6:30 p.m. for a ticketed, outdoor concert event. Juno award winning Canadian songstress- Holly Cole will headline the event and will be joined by singer, songwriter, poet, Sarah Slean, and Canadian country duo- The Stellas. Proceeds from the concert will go towards preserving Heritage Park’s priceless collection of buildings and artifacts.

On August 9, Heritage Park is hosting a live Western Rodeo at 2 p.m., sponsored by the Friends of Heritage Park. The Rodeo will be included with the regular admission, and open for everyone to enjoy. This one-hour exhibition will allow Heritage Park guests to get up close and personal with all the thrills and spills of a live rodeo.

In addition to these special 50th anniversary launches and events, two new exhibits will open this summer.  On June 20, the Famous 5 Centre of Canadian Women will open as the first of its kind in Canada. The exhibit is a replica of Nellie McClung’s Calgary home and will initially feature the story of five brave, persistent and victorious Alberta women- Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, Henrietta Muir Edwards and Emily Murphy- who petitioned and won the right for women to be considered “Persons” under the British North America Act in 1929.

August will also see the opening of the River Forth Dining Car- a restored 1929 CP rail car on which visitors will be able to enjoy a historically themed lunch or dinner, as the car is pulled behind Heritage Park’s steam engine and circles the Park.

On September 14, Heritage Park will host the third annual, Sharing our Culture, Treaty 7 Pow Wow, in partnership with Treaty 7 Management Corporation. Once again, during this urban pow wow the Park will be alive with the pageantry and colour of an authentic pow wow where the world’s best First Nations dancers and drummers vie for the coveted title and purse. The same weekend will see the launch of the first Making Treaty 7 performance. Performed by a cast of 20 First Nations and non-native artists, Making Treaty 7 is a groundbreaking, entertaining and challenging theatrical experience that invites people of all ages and backgrounds to consider an enlightened, sustainable future for everyone, together.
