Alberta Leaves Positive Impression on Chinese Buyers at Showcase Canada Asia
Destination Canada’s Showcase Canada Asia is an annual marketplace that brings together Canadian sellers and buyers from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in a business exchange environment with pre-scheduled appointments and networking events. This year’s event took place in Nanjing, China from October 17 to 20, 2016.
The Travel Alberta team attended the event to help increase tourism sales in Asia and strengthen business relationships with tour operators from these important markets. The team held 94 appointments with Chinese and Taiwanese buyers over the three and a half-day event. Hainan Airlines’ Beijing to Calgary direct flight was highly recommended to the buyers to develop either single province, dual-province or dual-country travel itineraries.
While in market, Travel Alberta partnered with destination marketing organizations (DMOs) Edmonton Tourism, Tourism Calgary and Banff & Lake Louise Tourism along with 35 Alberta industry partners and Alberta-based receptive tour operators (RTOs) to host 127 Chinese and Taiwanese buyers for an Alberta buyer dinner and fashion show. Each participating partner dressed in attire to bring an Alberta tourism experience to life and provided a stunning image as a visual backdrop. The focus of the event was to promote winter in Alberta and creatively showcase tourism experiences in the province.
“Throughout the event Chinese buyers were highly engaged and actively sharing the experience with their clientele and followers on social media channels WeChat and Weibo,” says Darlene Fedoroshyn, Travel Alberta Marketing Director, Asia. “Congratulations to Team Alberta for raising the bar yet again.”
Following Showcase Canada Asia, Team Alberta conducted a sales mission in partnership with Hainan Airlines in three Chinese cities: Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing. The mission was open to DMOs and Alberta-based RTOs, with Edmonton Tourism, Tourism Calgary, Banff & Lake Louise Tourism, Amazing Travel, Westar Travel, Canadian Scenery Travel, Calgary Tours and EUR Tour Group participating.
The mission included training on Alberta tourism experiences for over 165 travel agents and tour operators as well as VIP trade dinners and media interviews with over 30 reporters from newspaper, magazine, radio and online media. As part of the trade training, Travel Alberta delivered a one hour presentation in Mandarin covering Calgary, Canmore, Banff & Lake Louise, Jasper, Edmonton, Dinosaur Provincial Park and Drumheller, Waterton and Fort McMurray. The DMOs were also engaged in a question and answer session about each of their regions. The RTO team provided local Alberta expertise to help agents “close the sale” on Alberta product with their clients.
