Winner of Small Town Saturday Night announced!

Travel Alberta and Big Valley Jamboree are pleased to announce that the town of Bashaw, Alberta is the grand-prize winner of Small Town Saturday Night 2013.

The community shot to the top of the leaderboard in the contest’s second year, garnering over 30 per cent of the 55,000 online votes cast, earning them the privilege of hosting the grand-prize concert on April 27, 2013 at the Bashaw Arena. The community will also receive a $5,000 donation to the Bashaw Adult Learning Council for the Bashaw School Arts Infusion Program and Bashaw Creative Community Committee, courtesy of Travel Alberta.

“All across Alberta, our rural towns are filled with tremendous community spirit and pride in what they offer visitors – and that has shone through in the entries submitted for Small Town Saturday Night,” said Dr. Richard Starke, Minister of Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation. “I look forward to joining the celebration on April 27 for an incredible show that the people of Bashaw will never forget.”

Bashaw is a small community of 873 located 150 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. After previously placing in the top five in 2012, ultimately losing out to the community of Legal, Bashaw proved that persistence pays off by entering the 2013 contest with a two-minute parody of the opening musical number from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast that takes viewers on a virtual walkthrough of the community. The community’s particular flair for all things creative is on full display in the video which features a cast of local characters and highlights the town’s thriving theatre scene.

"We are beyond excited to have received the most votes for the Small Town Saturday Night Contest,” said Jackie Northey, Bashaw Small Town Saturday Night Committee member. “I don't think the thrill of achievement could ever match the amazing community building we experienced. Our entire community and supporters pulled together in a truly collaborative and caring way. We are so grateful for the vision and generosity of Big Valley Jamboree, Travel Alberta and all the sponsors who recognized the value of supporting rural Alberta. We look forward to welcoming many to our community on April 27."

As the 2013 grand-prize winner, Bashaw will host their own mini-Big Valley Jamboree featuring performances by country music stars Chad Brownlee, Clayton Bellamy, Alee, Bobby Wills and Tenille. All funds raised from the concert will benefit the Bashaw Adult Learning Council for the Bashaw School Arts Infusion Program and Bashaw Creative Community Committee.

“Bashaw’s perseverance, creativity and competitive spirit have once again shone the spotlight on this wonderful Alberta community,” explained Larry Werner, Producer, Panhandle Productions. “We would like to thank all the communities that took the time and effort to enter this contest. It is evident that community spirit is still alive and well in Alberta.”

“Small Town Saturday Night celebrates the big stories Alberta’s rural communities have to share. As this year’s entries show, the exceptional experiences available outside of our major centres, from rollicking rodeos to magnificent music festivals, combined with Albertans’ enthusiasm for welcoming visitors to their hometowns should make exploring rural Alberta a must on everyone’s to-do list this summer,” commented Royce Chwin, Vice President of Marketing for Travel Alberta.

In addition to the grand-prize, Travel Alberta is also awarding the four runners-up, New Sarepta, Foremost, Namao and Cold Lake with $1,000 prizes to be donated toward the local charity or municipal initiative identified in their original submissions.

All awards will be presented at the Growing Rural Tourism Conference in Camrose on April 9, 2013. More information on the Small Town Saturday Night contest can be found at www.bigvalleyjamboree/stsn
