$37m Canmore Hotel and Conference Centre gets Green Light
The Canmore Planning Commission approved plans for a 124-room hotel and conference centre at Spring Creek. Following a year of record-breaking tourism, “The Malcolm Hotel” will help address accommodation for the increasing number of visitors to the Town. Located in the heart of Canmore, the Spring Creek hotel will be the first traditional hotel built in Canmore in 20 years.
“The Malcolm Hotel was part of Spring Creek’s original master plan and it will be another option to host conferences in Canmore, so we’re very pleased to have the Town’s support,” says Frank Kernick, developer, Spring Creek. “We’ll begin construction this month.”
Situated between two natural-flowing creeks, the hotel will feature 124 rooms and 6,500 sq. ft. of meeting and banquet space. Its ambience and design will reflect the pageantry, royalty, and heritage of past Scottish kings, as well as Canmore’s own unique history and legacy.
“Last year visitation reached a record high in Canmore and this number is only going to grow,” says Kernick, “We’re doing our part to help address the Town’s need for more lodging options to support tourism.”
Spring Creek’s vision of The Malcolm includes an array of amenities; hot tubs, a fitness centre, and an elegant outdoor pool that offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains from the second floor open-air mezzanine. A steakhouse restaurant and bar will be located in the hotel and will accommodate more than 175 people. The Malcolm will offer guests four-star service and hospitality.
The Malcolm will be an extension of Spring Creek’s vibrant vacation property division that has been in operation for the past five years and caters to high-end clientele. The hotel is named after King Malcolm III of Scotland, who was nicknamed “Canmore”, Gaelic for “Big Head”. Designed with the historic flavour of timberframe elements, the hotel will encompass an authentic and contemporary mountain feel.
Spring Creek’s professional in-house design team collaborated with award-winning Marshall Tittemore Architects to design the hotel. With 25 years of design in western Canada, its portfolio includes Banff Aspen Lodge and Sunshine Terraces at Sunshine Village.
The hotel will be situated at the gateway to the island of Spring Creek closest to the Main Street entrance. It will be off the beaten path, yet minutes from Main Street. Guests at The Malcolm will enjoy convenient access to downtown Canmore’s eclectic collection of restaurants, cafés, pubs, artisan galleries and boutique shops. Canmore’s $39 million recreation centre, Elevation Place, is located five minutes walk away and features indoor pools, climbing walls, an art studio, and public library.
In 2015 Canmore reached a record number of overnight visitors, with the biggest increase seen over the summer months. According to the Canmore Hotel and Lodging Association, the occupancy rate for June, July and August last year was up by nine per cent compared to 2014. The Association’s statistics show that occupancy rates for hotels and motels from January 1 until August 30, 2015 were up by 10 per cent from the previous year.
“The Canmore hotel market exists in a unique economic bubble from the rest of Alberta. We’ve got an increasing number of Albertans that are opting for staycations and are choosing to visit the Rockies instead of venturing abroad. We’re also seeing a huge increase in tourism from the US and beyond due to the strong US dollar and this is expected to continue,” says Kernick.
As the gateway to Banff National Park, the launch of the new hotel will help to accommodate a growing number of overnight visitors to the park. In 2015 Banff National Park welcomed 3.6 million independent visitors; the highest number since 2003. 2017 is forecast to be another record year for visitation following Parks Canada’s announcement of free admission to National Parks in 2017 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation (Source: Alberta Tourism Market Monitor report)
The $2 billion expansion of the Calgary airport is also expected to increase the number of guests to the Rocky Mountains. Slated to open in fall, the airport will be able to handle traffic from more than 15 million travelers.
Canmore has 12,300 permanent residents to date and 6,000 non-permanent residents, making it the largest community in the Alberta Rockies (Source: Tourism Canmore Kananaskis). Visitors to Canmore can enjoy mountain sports, remarkable dining, vibrant arts and culture, and boutique retail stores. According to the Canmore Business and Tourism’s 2015-2020 Strategic Plan, the 2020 target for the tourism sector is an annual visitor spend of $400 million (up from $278 million in 2012).
