Alberta celebrates International Astronomy Day

Astronomy in Alberta is a big draw with visitors to our province as well as the locals that live here. Under the ambient glow of city light, it’s impossible to see more than a few hundred stars. But venture around Alberta and it is whole different story.

It is time again to celebrate these authentic astronomy experiences in our province with International Astronomy Day, April 20, 2013 - and the Calgary and Edmonton chapters of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) are celebrating this day with many events throughout Alberta.

Calgary's RASC chapter is offering Public Star Nights at Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park on April 12, and at Fish Creek Provincial Park on April 13. In addition, they are offering Star Nights in Vulcan, occuring once per month, including April 12.

Edmonton’s RASC chapter has volunteers that assist to explore the sky at the Telus World of Science's astronomy observatory. They have weekend evening hours from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. from April 5 to April 26. There are also special events around the observatory on April 20 to celebrate International Astronomy Day.

The University of Calgary’s Rothney Astrophysical Observatory, located near Priddis, is also a great venue for the public to connect with the universe through their public events and Open Houses. They are open for evening drop-ins on April 22 from 8:30 – 10:30 p.m.

The University of Alberta in Edmonton also has an observatory that is operated by the Department of Physics. There are evening observation hours throughout the month of April 2013, Thursdays from 9:00 – 10:00 p.m.

As part of Travel Alberta’s Alberta Stories initiative, and to do our part for International Astronomy Day, we have launched a new Alberta story on YouTube to celebrate Alberta’s astronomy scene. The largest dark sky preserve in the world is right here in Jasper National Park and Jasper celebrates with Jasper Dark Sky Festival, October 26-27, 2013.

The Alberta Stories initiative plays an important role in bringing Alberta’s tourism brand to life. These stories showcase the true character and distinctive personalities at the core of Alberta’s tourism experience and continue to deepen the connection we have with our visitors.
