Extended highway closures currently in effect - March 16, 2017

What's Happening?

Due to high avalanche hazard, the following extended road closures are currently in effect:

  • The Icefields Parkway (93N)  from Niblock gate to Saskatchewan Crossing. The estimated time of re-opening is currently afternoon Sunday, March 19, with moderate confidence.
  • The Icefields Parkway (93N) from Saskatchewan Crossing to Jasper. The estimated time of re-opening has been postponed until Friday, March 17 at 3 p.m. MT
  • Highway 93S in Kootenay National Park. The estimated time of re-opening has been postponed to March 17 at 1 p.m. MT
Why is this being done?

Avalanche conditions are High at all elevations. We are currently experiencing warming temperatures and precipitation causing a natural avalanche cycle.

What does this mean for residents and visitors?

Safety is a top priority for Parks Canada. The highway will remain closed until the risk for large avalanches decreases or can be safely mitigated.
