British adventure filmmaker travels around Alberta on a tandem bike

Documentary filmmaker Dominic Gill set off from Calgary on May 16 to film a series of online webisodes that will air in the United Kingdom on telegraph.co.uk, the online site of Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Alberta's majestic landscapes, the adventure is being filmed for a series of online webisodes entitled “Take A Seat”, as well as for a feature-length documentary film chronicling the trip. Gill, an avid social media user, will also be sharing stories about his travels though his various social media channels. The ambitious adventure across the province will see the notable British television presenter covering more than 2,400 kilometres on a tandem bicycle, ending June 7.

Joining him on various legs of this once-in-a-lifetime trip are four Albertans, hand-selected by Gill for their enthusiasm for cycling and for the province they call home. During their travels, the guests will also get to join Gill and his small crew as they discover some of the amazing experiences Alberta has to offer, such digging for dinosaur fossils with palaeontologists in the Canadian Badlands, white-water rafting, hiking, climbing in the Canadian Rockies and enjoying a brief respite from the road in cities including Edmonton and Calgary. Gill will also be joined for two legs of his journey by contest winners from the U.K., who will be experiencing Alberta for the first time.

Gill and his crew, who have previously done similar tandem adventures across North and South America and Egypt, have travelled south from Calgary to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, through Lethbridge, Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, Medicine Hat and are now travelling to Dinosaur Provincial Park, Drumheller, Camrose, Edmonton, Hinton, Jasper, down the Icefields Parkway to Lake Louise, Banff and then back to Calgary to complete the route.

Coordination of this trip is provided in collaboration with our industry partners through Travel Alberta’s Visit Alberta Media program, which acts as a platform for us to tell our stories. Travel Alberta’s media and public relations objective is to support marketing efforts regionally, nationally and internationally by strategically increasing exposure for Alberta as a travel destination. Our approach integrates traditional and social media activities that highlight Alberta’s authentic experiences. In collaboration with our industry partners, Travel Alberta also supports qualified online, print and broadcast outlets on assignment from key global markets in profiling Alberta travel experiences to audiences around the world.

The U.K. is a key market for Travel Alberta. It continues to deliver the highest amount of overseas visitors to Alberta than all other markets. Visitors from the U.K. have a propensity to stay longer and Alberta’s icons and experiences are attractive to them. Access to Alberta from the U.K. is strong with weekly non-stop flights from major U.K. airports as well as connecting flights and charters. WestJet signed a new codeshare agreement with British Airways, providing more convenient connections with through-baggage capabilities and competitive pricing.

About Dominic Gill - Dominic has made a name for himself as the man on the tandem bicycle. He started with a journey from Alaska to which lasted two years and involved more than 270 random strangers who jumped on the back seat.
