New Minister Maureen Kubinec looking forward to promoting Alberta

Maureen Kubinec, MLA for Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock, was sworn-in as Minister of Alberta Culture and Tourism, on September 15, 2014. She will work closely with Travel Alberta to expand efforts to promote Alberta as a must-experience destination and continue to lead the path to implementing Alberta’s Tourism Framework.

Honoured by the appointment, Minister Kubinec says she’s looking forward to promoting Alberta, not just nationally and internationally, but locally as well. “There’s so much to see and do in Alberta, and it’s exciting to be in a position to help create even more experiences in communities across Alberta.”

Merging the culture, tourism and recreation divisions together makes sense, believes Kubinec, as they all contribute to what makes Alberta a great place to live and visit. As a rural MLA and rural Albertan, Kubinec also appreciates the value tourism has to smaller Alberta communities.

“Tourism is essential to Alberta’s economy, and has a lot of potential to diversify economies for both urban and rural communities. I look forward to working with industry partners to grow tourism to a $10.3 billion industry by 2020.”

Ms. Kubinec was born in Lacombe and raised in Three Hills. She and her husband, Tim, now operate a family farm in the Linaria district near Westlock. They have four adult children.

Minister Kubinec was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly on April 23, 2012. Ms. Kubinec deeply values the public service, serving as a school trustee with the Three Hills and Pembina Hills school boards before serving as president of the Alberta School Boards Association from 2004 to 2007. She was also a member and vice-chair of the Persons with Developmental Disabilities Northeast Community Board from 2008 to 2012, and a councillor and deputy reeve for Westlock county from 2010 to 2012.
