Travel Alberta Japan Social Media Campaigns Recognized by Expedia

Working with online travel agencies (OTAs) provides Travel Alberta with key opportunities to drive our competitiveness in international markets and engage consumers on OTA social media channels. Last year, Travel Alberta’s Japan and North America teams worked on two successful social media campaigns with Expedia. On March 4, 2015, Expedia Media Solutions recognized these campaigns by presenting Travel Alberta with the exclusive MVP of Media Solutions Asia-Pacific DMO Campaign of the Year award – the first ever awarded in the DMO category.

“Working together as a cohesive team led to this special award. These campaigns are very effective in reaching social media influencers who help to strengthen Alberta’s brand in Japan,” said Misae Konishi, Travel Alberta Team Member, Market Development Director, Japan.

The objective of the 2014 campaigns was to increase air and accommodation bookings to Alberta through Expedia.co.jp and engage consumers on Alberta through Expedia’s social media channels. As part of Travel Alberta’s global partnership with Expedia, a new Expedia Alberta Japanese website with content tailored to the market was also launched in October.

The award recognizes Travel Alberta’s seamless integration of social media usage to enhance display ads promotion and also our creative Facebook campaign, which resulted in high engagement from consumers. The two campaigns led to a 47% year-over-year increase in travellers booking Alberta vacation components, such as flights and hotel rooms, through Expedia.

The award was received at a reception which highlighted Alberta to attendees from 70 airline representatives and 10 tourism organizations, including the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) and Brand USA.
