Glacier Skywalk ready to open to the world

Canada's newest iconic tourism experience opens May 1, 2014.

High up at the Columbia Icefield in the Canadian Rockies the snow is melting, wildlife is emerging and the brand new Glacier Skywalk is ready to welcome visitors from around the world. The project, which was previously recognized on an international scale with a World Architecture Festival award, has received numerous accolades for design and environmental monitoring and assessment since completion last fall.

Brewster Travel Canada’s Glacier Skywalk is a new, fully accessible attraction that offers visitors a unique way to connect with the wilderness of Jasper National Park. A cliff-edge interpretive walkway provides an immersive and multi-sensory experience centered around the glaciology, biology and ecology of the unique Columbia Icefield region. At the end of the walkway waits a thrilling glass-floored observation platform 280 metres above the breathtaking Sunwapta Valley.

“The Columbia Icefield is a world class destination” said David McKenna, President, Brewster Travel Canada. Every summer, our Glacier Adventure tours bring visitors from near and far onto the surface of the ancient Athabasca Glacier. We’re delighted that the Glacier Skywalk now offers a new way to connect to the immense powers of the peaks and glaciers that surround it.”

The project team collaborated closely with Parks Canada to develop this new experience. “This exciting new offer provides an impressive opportunity for Canadians to appreciate and enjoy their National Parks, while exploring the unique natural and cultural heritage of a UNESCO World Heritage Site,” said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada. “Parks Canada believes in offering a variety of ways for visitors to experience their protected places, and to connect with nature. I invite park visitors to discover this amazing view from the edge (literally) and the learning opportunities it provides along the Icefields Parkway - one of Canada’s most scenic and rewarding destinations.”

The Glacier Skywalk will be open daily beginning May 1, 2014. Grand opening celebrations will be held at the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre on May 10-11, 2014. Visitors are invited to join Brewster Travel Canada in celebrating the opening with family events held May 10 and May 11 between 12 pm and 3 pm.
