Excitement builds for Bon Accord’s upcoming largest Summer Skies Equinox festival

August 26, 2014 – BON ACCORD, AB Over a thousand are anticipated at the third annual Summer Skies Equinox festival on September 20, 2014 in Bon Accord. The event has steadily grown in popularity and size, this year turning downtown Bon Accord into a myriad of culture, energy and entertainment.

This year’s event takes on a carnival feel with a Mardi Gras theme. New additions to the festival include the Edmonton Street Performers Festival performers, a light parade prior to evening fireworks, and geocaching throughout the town. The entire event and activities are free, with the exception of the Long Table Dinner which requires pre-purchased tickets.

“The success of the Summer Skies Equinox for the past two years is a testament to its uniqueness and appeal for all ages,” comments Randolph Boyd, Mayor of Bon Accord. “We welcome residents and visitors alike to witness and partake in the infectious energy created by this annual festival celebrating the summer into autumn equinox.”

The Summer Skies Equinox officially begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 20 with a pancake breakfast hosted by Bon Accord’s Mayor and Council at the Community Hall. Activities throughout the day include geocaching, Agrium’s Space Place offering face painting, crafts, and games, as well as the Williams Art Marathon showcasing local artisans and their talents.

The downtown sidewalks will come alive at 3 p.m. with street performers entertaining festival goers well into the evening. Volunteers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and other amateur astronomers, will be downtown to assist and educate both amateur and professional sky gazers. The festival concludes with a Twilight Tea by Vintage Petals, Light Parade, and fireworks display at 9:45 p.m. at the Sports Grounds. The full schedule of activities is available on the event website.

“We expanded our buffet style feast this year by partnering with Sturgeon County Bounty. Together, we’re hosting an outdoor Long Table Dinner for 250 people to enjoy amazing local cuisine by 5 star chef Phil Hughes,” explains Vicki Zinyk, Chief Administrative Officer of Bon Accord. “The ticketed dinner is always a sell out so we encourage people to get their tickets early either online or at the Bon Accord Town Office at 5025-50 Avenue."

Thank you to the following confirmed platinum and gold sponsors of this year’s event: Agrium, FortisAlberta, Lilypad Lane, Sturgeon County, Vintage Petals, and Williams Energy.
