Eau Claire Distillery wins International Awards

Alberta’s original craft distillery, Eau Claire Distillery has won five prestigious awards.

Eau Claire Distillery was honoured at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, considered to be the most influential spirits competition in the world. From more than 2,252 spirits, the largest number in the competition’s 17-year history, Prickly Pear EquineOx received the Gold Medal in the flavoured Vodka category, while Parlour Gin received the Bronze Medal in the Gin category. This year’s competition experienced some of the most significant growth in the Gin category, which this year brought in 268 entries, up from 197 in 2016, and 136 in 2015.

The distillery’s internationally acclaimed spirits were also recognized at the 2017 Spirits International Prestige (SIP) Awards, where Parlour Gin was awarded one of two Consumer Choice Awards out of the 45+ gins in the Gin category and a Best in Class – Platinum award. Prickly Pear EquineOx won Silver in the infused/flavoured Vodka category. The SIP Awards, are a unique and internationally respected blind tasting competition with over 673 spirit brands and 118 member Consumer Judging Panel.

One of the most reliable and universal indications of spirits excellence, a San Francisco World Spirits medal has become a recognized affirmation of high quality. The win by Eau Claire Distillery at the prestigious competition conveys that Prickly Pear EquineOx and Parlour Gin are among the finest spirits in the world. This is Parlour Gin’s second successful year  in the San Francisco medal count. The 43 judges of the 2017 Competition were established spirits-industry experts, including:

  • Anthony Dias Blue, Editor-In-Chief of The Tasting Panel, The SOMM Journal and The Clever Root, Los Angeles.
  • Tony Abou-Ganim, Master Mixologist, “The Master Mixologist” Beverage Consultant and Educator, Las Vegas.
  • David Wondrich, Spirits Writer, Author and Cocktail Historian, New York
  • Julie Reiner, Co-Owner & Mixologist, Flatiron Lounge and Clover Club, New York.
  • Jeffery Moregenthaler, Bar Manager & Founder of Clyde Common at Portland’s Ace Hotel, America’s Bartender of the Year and the country’s Best Cocktail and Spirits Writer at the 2016 Spirited Awards, Portland.

“Winning the Consumer Choice award is the greatest honour, because it is an honest reflection of customer taste, with no pre-conceived notions or biases,” says Eau Claire Distillery President and Founder, David Farran. “We have invested heavily in quality and taste – I am thrilled that an Alberta product continues to win prestigious international recognition, year upon year. We’ll share this one with the barley farmers of Alberta!”

The SIP Awards is unique in its extensive screening and security measures which ensure the Judging Panel is comprised purely of every‐day spirit consumers, without influence from the spirit industry. Key elements include presentation of unmarked, temperature controlled, undiluted samples, each precision poured in its own eat glass, vessels scientifically designed to amplify the tasting experience. Winning a SIP Award is a critical milestone that signifies to the market that the most discerning and unbiased group, who eventually vote with their wallets, have pre‐selected their favorites.
