Southwest Alberta celebrates Tourism Week with Open House

Employees and leaders in Lethbridge and Southwest Alberta’s travel industry are taking part in Chinook Country Tourist Association’s Open House on June 18, a special event designed to bring attention to the economic impact and social benefits of tourism in our community. 

The Open House is organized as part of Tourism Week in Canada, a national initiative that runs June 16 - June 20, highlighting how Canada’s tourism sector contributes to the standard of living and quality of life for all Canadians.

“Tourism is a key contributor to our economy, not only on a national level but also right here in Southwest Alberta,” said Nikolaus Wyslouzil, Executive Director, Chinook Country Tourist Association. “Tourism also means business in our community, since more than 6000 jobs and 1000 businesses in our region are directly supported by the industry.”

"With summer just around the corner, we hope that visitors and locals will stop at our Visitor Information Centre and learn about the attractions in the region. Everyone is welcome. We are also giving away 150 free tickets to the June 21 Lethbridge Bulls Game.

Our marketing campaign will help show prospective visitors the natural beauty and rich cultural history of our region.”

Tourism is an $84.8 billion industry in Canada that directly supports 614,600 jobs from coast to coast. This represents 9.2% of all jobs in Canada and makes tourism the third largest job creator in the country.

The Open House provides an opportunity for visitors and locals to learn about some of the great attractions in our region. Some will be onsite showcasing their tourism products and experiences. 

The schedule of events will include:
Play with the Lethbridge Bulls (3pm – 4pm)
Enjoy free Hay Rides (4pm – 6pm)
Try Line Dancing (5pm & 6pm)
Explore a Tipi and Living off the Land Program (3pm – 6:30pm)
Experience Alberta Birds of Prey (3pm – 6:30pm)
Chow Down with Flyin’ Hawaiian Food Truck (3pm – 7pm)
Have photos taken on the Wind Gauge aka Wrecking Ball (3pm -6:30pm)
Dig for Dino’s (4pm – 6:30pm)

Tourism Week in Canada is a grassroots initiative that brings attention to the economic opportunity available to Canada through travel and tourism activity and the public policy challenges preventing the sector from capitalizing on those opportunities. Tourism Week in Canada aligns tourism organizations, businesses and other partners from across the country around a common vision: A tourism sector that plays a more meaningful role in growing the Canadian economy.

Chinook Country Tourist Association is a Destination Marketing Organization. The non-profit organization markets Lethbridge and Southwest Alberta as a tourist destination representing stakeholders in the region through services such as website presence, print publications, visitor information services, and an online reservations system.
