Tourism Calgary Destination Report - Q3 2013

The third quarter of 2013 was marked by flood recovery efforts and a new clustering of world-class events in late August and September.

Tourism Calgary’s award winning “Calgary, Our Doors are Open.” campaign, paired with remarkable efforts by the Calgary Stampede and across our industry, managed to mitigate the flood’s negative impact on our tourism economy. Hotel occupancy and airport traffic are two positive indicators demonstrating the resiliency of Calgary’s tourism industry. We must continue to support those businesses who are still working to recover and rebuild.

Fortunately the convergence of major international sporting events – the PGA’s Shaw Charity Classic, The Masters at Spruce Meadows and Tour of Alberta – combined with new, unique events like Opera in the Village and Beakerhead to provide compelling reasons to visit Calgary in August and September.

  • 1 million visits surpassed on visitcalgary.com 3 months earlier than 2012
  • 300,000 views for flood recovery video – 2nd most popular video in July on YouTube Canada
  • At 81.6% Calgary hotels surpass post-Stampede occupancy target
  • 33 events and 29,000 hotel room nights booked through first 3 quarters
  •  More than 52,800 referrals sent from visitcalgary.com to industry websites in the 3rd quarter alone
