Fort McMurray Airport Authority Announces Appointment of New President and CEO
Fort McMurray Airport Authority (FMAA) Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Mr. R.J. Steenstra has been selected as incoming President and Chief Executive Officer of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. The selection was made following a competitive search process that began earlier this year. Mr. Steenstra will commence his new role with the Fort McMurray Airport Authority on September 12, 2016.
“R.J. joins Fort McMurray Airport at a key point in our development,” said Airport Authority Board Chair Allan Kallal. “His appointment represents a new era that builds on previous successes. R.J. brings a wealth of airport leadership experience within the Alberta aviation sector and has a successful track record of strategy development and delivery.”
Mr. Steenstra is currently Chief Executive Officer of the Red Deer Airport Authority. He brings a diverse background to the role with senior airport leadership and operations experience and is currently the Vice Chair for the International Association of Airport Executives (Canada).

BIOGRAPHY - MR. R.J. Steenstra
Roelof-Jan (RJ) Steenstra is currently Chief Executive Officer of the Red Deer Regional Airport Authority (RDRAA), a positon he has held since 2011. During RJ’s tenure, the airport has transformed into a viable commercial transportation asset for Central Alberta experiencing 4 years of revenue growth, attracting a regional and national air carrier and undergoing a significant airport development program.
Prior to his appointment to RDRAA, RJ contributed to the transportation, technology and financial industries in various senior roles. RJ holds a BSc. in Anthropology and BA in Communications from the University of Calgary, and an MBA from Royal Roads University. RJ also earned an Accredited Airport Executive (AAE) designation from the International Association of Airport Executives and an International Airport Professional (IAP) designation from the International Civil Aviation Organization/Airports Council International.
RJ has extensive leadership experience and is active on a number of industry and community boards. He currently serves as a Vice Chair for IAAE (Canada) and a Director for ICAO/ACI Community of Practice and the NW Chapter of AAAE. He has also served as Chair for Tourism Red Deer and brings his passion to several airport industry committees including Canadian Airport Council’s Small Airport Caucus and Red Deer Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee.
