David Eggen, Minister of Culture and Tourism

On May 24, 2015, a new chapter began in Alberta’s history as Premier Notley and 11 cabinet ministers were sworn in, including David Eggen as Minister of Culture and Tourism.

“Tourism is important to our government and to the economy of Alberta. I am looking forward to working with our partners to increase our province’s reach to visitors at home and abroad.” says Minister Eggen.

The MLA for Edmonton-Calder was also appointed Minister of Education, and says both portfolios are equally important.

“I am honoured to work alongside Albertans, whose creative, innovative and entrepreneurial spirit is playing a vital role in strengthening our communities, enhancing our global reputation and diversifying our economy.”

Minister Eggen received a Bachelor of Education Degree in 1984 from the University of Alberta and then went to Zimbabwe, where he taught for three years. Upon his return to Edmonton he taught English and social studies at a number of local schools, including the Victoria School for the Performing Arts, prior to entering into politics.

The Minister first represented the riding of Edmonton-Calder from 2004 to 2008, and was re-elected as MLA in 2012. He served as the executive director of Friends of Medicare from 2008 to 2012. During his tenure as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, he served as a member of multiple committees, including standing committees on Alberta’s Economic Future; Families and Communities; and the Alberta Heritage Trust Fund.

The Eggen family lives in northwest Edmonton.
