Campground Transforms into a Lane of Lights

A project that started with just an idea and a little Christmas spirit.

Aspen Crossing, 2011 Rural Tourism Champion, got together with several local businesses to create a free Christmas light display for the public located in the Aspen Crossing Campground. “During last year’s Christmas dinner theatre we had several groups, who we bussed out, asking us to take them to see some Christmas lights on the way back home and even willing to pay a lot of money,” explains Jason Thornhill, owner and operator of Aspen Crossing. “But the problem was that we couldn't find anything. It was a bit disheartening and I remember talking with the staff about how spectacular our neighborhoods used to look at Christmas.”

The staff continued to reflect on this until a staff meeting this fall about ideas on how to utilize parts of the business during the winter. “It just came to us,” Jason says. “The campground is empty during the winter months but nearly every site has access to electricity. The next step was to figure out how to get other people as excited about Christmas light displays as us.” Staff members at Aspen Crossing reached out to local businesses to see if their was any interest in creating this “Lane of Lights” not only as a way to promote themselves and the community, but to boost community involvement at Christmas. “Even with the short notice,” Leslie Benner, event organizer, explains, “we had 14 companies sign on right away. We even have some community members interested in creating a display just for some Christmas fun.”

People will see displays from the Carseland Fire Department, Market Street from Vulcan, Bow Bench Retreat from Carseland, the Carseland School, UFA from Vulcan, the Chestermere Anchor, Unified Systems Group from Strathmore and many more. You can also look forward to AM 1060’s 20 ft. tall guitar!

The displays will be open every Tuesday to Sunday from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm up until January 7th. To get to the "Lane of Lights" you will need to access the Campground entrance, 800 ft. south from the main entrance into Aspen Crossing. And remember, It’s FREE!
