Position Summary

Travel Alberta leads the Team Alberta approach to grow Alberta’s tourism industry, and now the team is looking for a strong communicator to deliver this message using a creative and compelling approach to reach our many stakeholders.

The successful candidate is strategic, resourceful, collaborative and spirited, with a knack for finding a good story, connecting with many different audiences and demonstrating value in support of our industry partners, government stakeholders, media, the general public and Travel Alberta team members. Reporting to the Manager, Stakeholder Engagement and Communications, this position provides direction, advice, and tactics and evaluation for strategic communication and corporate storytelling activities that align with Travel Alberta’s business, marketing and communication strategy.


Corporate content development and dissemination
  • Create, curate and share tourism-related news and information both internally and externally through Travel Alberta’s corporate and social channels.
  • Create detailed and insightful reports on communications product and effort on a regular basis, including insight on results
  • Assist with content maintenance, including writing and editing updates to news, social media, website and other corporate publications. 
  • Manage corporate and industry social media accounts, including coordinating content, monitoring accounts and providing strategic advice to team members
  • Assist in coordinating and supporting corporate media relations, including writing key messages and media releases, pitching to media and preparing Travel Alberta spokespeople.
  • Support internal stakeholders in sharing information across business units and, where appropriate, with external stakeholders
  • Manage Travel Alberta’s internal communications site, Basecamp, including developing content, editing and overseeing site structure and design
  • Assist in the development of other internal communications and initiatives
Stakeholder engagement
  • Understand Travel Alberta’s audience/stakeholders to effectively develop and implement best practices in communication 
  • Establish and maintain effective business relationships with government representatives and Alberta industry partners to identify areas for further alignment and collaboration.
  • Guide and advise Travel Alberta in the development and application of communication practices 
  • Connect with industry partners where appropriate to support inquiries and the dissemination of tourism-related news and opportunities through Travel Alberta channels 
  • Coordinate and draft responses to Action Request (AR) items from Alberta Culture and Tourism. Duties include liaising with Alberta Culture and Tourism contacts, connecting with internal subject matter experts, generating thoughtful and accurate responses, obtaining necessary approvals and adhering to submission deadlines. 
  • Coordinate media requests and develop key messages to support Travel Alberta spokespeople 
  • Support initiatives that promote a respectful and inclusive workplace such as the Corporate Social Responsibility committee
Communications operations
  • Research, analyze, and report relevant communication, business, and industry information to support strategic decision making 
  • Assist in auditing and updating existing communications policies, initiatives and best practices to ensure strategic alignment
  • Monitor and report on corporate communication strategic objectives and accomplishments
  • Support reception and coordinators in responding to Info box requests
  • Advance and maintain Base Camp (internal communications portal) to support effective team member communications 
  • Assist in the creation, tracking and reconciliation of Corporate Communication business unit budget while adhering to Finance processes and deadlines
  • Provide support to Travel Alberta, other stakeholders, industry and media in the absence of the Director, Communications.
Brand stewardship
  • Ensure all corporate documents produced meet organizational brand standards.
  • Monitor and maintain regulatory compliance in Travel Alberta communications.
  • Identify activities that reinforce the brand to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Abide by the communications protocol established by Travel Alberta’s Mandate and Roles agreement with the Government of Alberta

Additional Requirements

  • Bachelor degree, preferably in communications, journalism, public relations or related area.
  • Five to seven years of progressive communications experience.
  • Knowledge of communication theory, concepts, and best practice 
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving experience 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; proficient in oral and written communication
  • Strong research and analytical skills in developing and interpreting reports, tracking channels/ efforts and providing regular, thoughtful analysis, insight and recommendations
  • Understanding of media relations, social media and key messaging 
  • Understand and interpret complex policies and procedures
  • Required to be innovative and adaptive, recommend solutions, and provide advice and guidance
  • Technically proficient and comfortable with using or learning a variety of computer applications, including content management, analytics, design and media management platforms
  • Ability to apply effective communication knowledge and skills in professional situations
  • Demonstrate confidence, patience, sensitivity, empathy, diplomacy, tact and maturity in fostering relationships and dealing with confidential and sensitive issues
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse people in a variety of settings and in stressful situations
  • Exceptionally organized and able to multi-task with a variety of projects 
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Team player, collaborator who is also able to take initiative and offer solutions before problems
  • Excellent writing, editing and public speaking skills are critical
  • Prior experience with communications, analytics and social media
  • Related experience in journalism is an asset
  • Related experience in marketing is an asset
  • Related experience in the tourism industry is an asset
