Title:  Educational Programmer

Terms:  Full-time summer employment from May 7 to August 31, 2019
Reports to: General Manager

The Friends of Jasper National Park are looking for an Educational Programmer to be part of our dynamic team. The programmer will prepare and deliver engaging and interactive programs for different age groups and backgrounds that give people an opportunity to experience, learn about and connect with Jasper’s rich natural and cultural heritage.

Key Responsibilities

The Educational Programmer will:

  • Lead outdoor environmental programs and naturalist activities for children and families;
  • Review, renew and lead nightly Jasper…A Walk in the Past historical tour;
  • Review, renew and lead weekly Junior Naturalist program;
  • Lead hikes, as needed, with a focus on Jasper’s natural and cultural heritage;
  • Collaborate with the Jasper Trails Alliance to assist with stewardship days in Jasper National Park – helping with the creation, restoration and rehabilitation of trails, while educating those involved;
  • Provide programming to local schools, outreach programs and community groups;
  • Participate in community events, including Canada Day and Parks Day;
  • Responsible for all aspects of running an educational program: administrative tasks, promotion, advertising, evaluation, keeping statistics, safety practices and continual learning for improving knowledge level;
  • Conduct program surveys, assist with ongoing evaluations and make recommendations for improvements;
  • Help at FJNP fundraising sales outlet, as required; and
  • Share knowledge, passion for and experiences in Jasper National Park with visitors.

Grant Conditions

This position is conditional upon the receipt of funding from the Canada Summer Jobs grant. In order to qualify for the position, individuals must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment; and
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Skills & Qualifications

The successful candidate for this position will have:

  • some post-secondary education in a related field (education, outdoor education, etc);
  • educational programming, outdoor programming, teaching or interpretation field experience;
  • excellent communication skills, oral and written. Preference may be given to candidates who are proficient in both of Canada’s official languages;
  • the ability to work with the public and volunteers in a friendly, positive, and professional manner;
  • the ability to use creativity to develop experiential programming for both children and adults.
  • strong computer skills, working in a Microsoft environment;
  • strong organizational skills with attention to detail;
  • creativity, adaptability and the ability to multi-task;
  • self-motivation, with an ability to work well on own or with others;
  • a passion for wild spaces, the outdoors and Jasper National Park;
  • an understanding of the National Park mandate, flora and fauna is required. We will also send the suitable candidate for further training;
  • a valid driver’s license;
  • physical ability to walk, hike and work with trail tools;
  • a mode of transportation (bicycle or vehicle) to get to/from program locations;
  • valid first aid and CPR certification (or obtain before the start date); and
  • a criminal record and enhanced security check (before the start date).
