A growing number of Alberta businesses are accepting Chinese mobile payment methods, which is good news for Chinese travellers--and Alberta’s growing visitor economy.
China is Alberta’s second largest overseas market and contributed $136 million to the visitor economy in 2016. In the same year, 135,000 visitors from China travelled to Alberta, an increase of 58 per cent from 2015.
It is becoming increasingly important to not only meet, but exceed, Chinese travellers’ expectations when visiting our province. A key component is being able to accept the popular mobile payment methods they use at home like WeChat Pay, Alipay or Union Pay.
Air Canada recently announced its acceptance of several Chinese mobile payment options when booking through its North American and Hong Kong websites. The airline joins several shopping malls and vendors, including Chinook Centre in Calgary and the new Premium Outlet Collection at the Edmonton International Airport.
