The Calgary Zoo’s Daily Dose At Home brings a welcome ray of sunshine to locals and fans around the world. The behind-the-scenes video series has amassed thousands of views and is one of several online offerings to keep spirits high and minds engaged during the zoo’s temporary closure.
Each day, a new video highlighting a different animal is posted to the zoo’s website, including fun facts from zookeepers and learning activities.
"The primary purpose behind what we were doing with the Daily Dose was to try and bring moments of joy, hope and inspiration into people’s online lives,” says Megan Douglas, the Calgary Zoo’s senior manager of communications and engagement. “We wanted to share our stories and our experiences in a way that builds curiosity, helps to foster exploration at home and provides a sense of empowerment about things that you can do to make the world a great place."
Along with the Daily Dose, the Zoo Along With You page offers a hub of learning activities for parents and educators to keep kids entertained at home. The zoo also plans to launch weekly live zookeeper experiences and virtual storytime on Facebook, with recordings available afterwards on YouTube.
"Feedback has been so heartwarming for our team, says Douglas. It’s uplifting for our employees to see and hear, and it’s such a wonderful way to highlight a lot of the individuals that are typically behind the scenes and shine a spotlight on the incredible work that they do every day at the zoo."
The Calgary Zoo’s online offerings continue the charitable organization’s conservation messaging near and far.
"It’s spurred a conversation with people around the globe and we’re hoping to keep that momentum alive with these new audiences that we’re building, says Douglas. What we’re finding, and what so many are, is that Albertans, Calgarians, we’re a resilient bunch and we’re going to weather this storm together."
