Public forums set to introduce Maligne Lake renewal proposals

Public forums will be held this month in Edmonton and Jasper to engage the public in visitor experience renewal proposals for Maligne Lake at Jasper National Park.

Long associated with its signature Spirit Island Boat Cruise, Maligne Tours Ltd. has also operated a selection of other popular outdoor and interpretive experiences, supported by food service and retail operations at a multi-faceted day lodge. The company has spent the past 24 months redeveloping its visitor experiences to more fully integrate the company’s long-standing operating pillars of environmental stewardship and award-winning heritage conservation. In addition to proposed new cultural and outdoor activities, the proposals call for the return of tent cabins to their original site, stemming from the 1920s, and the creation of a combined new day and overnight lodge offering a limited number of roofed accommodations units.

The renewal proposals have resulted from the company’s own research into customer needs and trends, as well as consultations over the past five months involving Parks Canada, environmental interest groups and citizens at large.

The forums are scheduled for: Edmonton – Tuesday, November 26, 7-9 p.m. at Clerks’ Quarters, Fort Edmonton Parks; and Jasper – Wednesday, November 27, 3-5 p.m. at the Skyline Room, Lobstick Lodge.

Proposal details are available on-line at in both comprehensive and executive summary form. As well, copies of the comprehensive and executive summary versions of the proposals will be made available at both public forums.

The company hopes to use the forums to garner feedback from stakeholder individuals and groups. “All of our proposals are available for public scrutiny and we invite both support and criticism at these public forums, as well as through direct contact either before or following the forums,” said Maligne Tours General Manager Pat Crowley.
