Calgary: Classic weekend draws rave reviews

When it comes to winter and hockey, Canada knows best. Despite frigid temperatures, Calgary’s hosting of the Heritage Classic is being hailed as the epitome of Canadian spirit according to a recent article by Jenna McMurray in the Calgary Sun on February 21.

The main event — which resulted in a 4-0 win for the Flames in front of more than 41,000 shivering spectators at McMahon Stadium Sunday — and its accompanying events may be over, but the meticulously-crafted rink isn’t finished playing host yet. The ice will be maintained by an NHL crew until Sunday for other related activities.

Tourism Calgary said hosting the Heritage Classic drew both dollars and recognition to the city. “There was lots of economy driven over the last few days,” said president and CEO Randy Williams, noting many restaurants and retailers were bustling with business. “I was at the game and sitting in front of people from Ontario, and in front of me were people from Lethbridge. The fact Sunday’s game was broadcast across the continent also drew eyes to Calgary just as people are starting to think about their summer vacations, said Williams. “This kind of event puts Calgary on eyeballs across North America,” he said. “The first part of selling a destination is creating awareness about a destination.”
