Vulcan Goes Mobile!

Mobile technology is here to stay – Morgan Stanley’s reported that by early 2014 more of us will be accessing the internet via a mobile devise than by desktop. Recognizing these mobile statistics, the Vulcan Business Development Society and Vulcan Tourism, with support from the Rural Alberta Development Fund, is releasing a new smartphone app for the county.

By using the new Vulcan app, visitors can take a science tour through the County, find a deal in the digital coupon book and enjoy a celebrity narrated walking tour.

“We are thrilled to have Star Trek’s Garrett Wang come in and do the voice overs for the audio tour in this app, it's a really cool feature that takes people for two separate walking tours of Vulcan,” explains Catherine Pooley, Vulcan Tourism Coordinator. “Or get into the scavenger hunt and win yourself a prize, we’ve built lots of very cool features in the app to keep Vulcan in the space ages.”

Created by Seekers Media, Edmonton, in conjunction with Vulcan Business Development Society (VBDS) and Vulcan Tourism, the app allows visitors to engage in the region, share their findings with social media networks and reference the digital guidebook.

Through their Vulcan Innovation Project, VBDS has been investigating and incorporating technology in various sectors to benefit tourism and economic development in the region. Mobile technology offers a great tool for information and the enhancement of experiences for visitors and residents.

“We are really excited about the potential of this new app. Information can be added from our offices as we continue to expand the tours and community information,” said Leslie Warren, Economic Development Officer for Vulcan Business Development Society.

“It was important for us at Seekers Media to build the app with a content management system, allowing VBDS and Vulcan Tourism full management of the content. By having this level of flexibility with the platform it includes for things like aurora borealis alerts to their notification subscribers that Vulcan Tourism can send out when viewing conditions are prime,” explains Seekers Media President Jim Barr.

The Vulcan app is available now for iPad, iPhone, Android and BlackBerry.
