Canadian Tourism Awards to recognize Calgary Stampede heroics

David Goldstein, President and CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC), has announced that he will be presenting a special President's Award of Distinction to the 2013 Calgary Stampede and the people of Calgary at the 2013 Canadian Tourism Awards, held at Ottawa's Fairmont Château Laurier on December 3.
"Many Canadians faced hardship this year and many are still rebuilding. Resiliency and community define Canada and nowhere has this been more aptly demonstrated than by the heroic efforts of the people of Calgary and the 2013 Stampede team who remarkably opened the gates, on time, only days after being hit by Alberta's most devastating floods in a generation. The "Hell or High Water" campaign embodies the pride and perseverance of both Calgarians and the western frontier spirit celebrated annually through the Stampede," stated Goldstein.
The Canadian Tourism Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of Canada's vibrant tourism entrepreneurs and represent the best of Canada's spectacular travel and tourism industry. This forum provides the perfect opportunity for Calgary and The Stampede team to be lauded by their peers.
"Albertans responded to a natural disaster with perseverance and optimism  - and as destination marketers, we know that honest-to-goodness community spirit is what attracts visitors to a place and what gives it staying power as a place to go," said Vern Kimball, CEO of the Calgary Stampede. "On behalf of Alberta's tourism industry we are appreciative and incredibly honoured to receive this special Canadian Tourism Award. Returning all of our venues to their pre-flood condition will be months of work  - and this accolade is sure to give our entire team of employees and volunteers a burst of energy."
The Canadian Tourism Awards are an annual highlight of the TIAC Tourism Congress, being held in Ottawa from December 2-4 at the Fairmont Château Laurier. For more information on the 2013 Tourism Congress please click here
