Tourism Calgary Sport Event Bid Wins and Summer Hosting

Recent wins to bring future benefits to Calgary’s tourism businesses while past successes come to fruition this summer. 

Three recent bid wins will benefit Calgary hotels, restaurants, attractions, retails stores and more all during otherwise low-occupancy weekend periods:

-2014 Alberta Summer Games - Tourism Calgary supported The City of Airdrie in their bid to host the 2014 Alberta Summer Games, which will result in 1,000 room nights in the North East quadrant.

-2014 Broomball National Championship - Tourism Calgary supported Calgary Broomball with bid expertise and a hosting grant to bring the national event to Calgary resulting in an estimated 1,000 room nights.

-2013 & 2014 16U Canadian West Open Volleyball Championship - Calgary wins the event’s most competitive bid process that will bring a minimum of 3,000 room nights consecutive years from participants, families and officials during the May long weekend.

Throughout the bid and hosting phases, Tourism Calgary supported the successful efforts to bring the following events to Calgary all happening this summer:

-2012 Canadian Track & Field Championship – June 27 – 30

-2012 Swimming Canada Age Group Nationals – July 25 – 30

-2012 Ironman 70.3 – July 29

-2012 IVF World Outrigger Sprint Championship – August 11 – 15

-2012 Water Ski National Championship – August 13 – 16
