2015 Tour of Alberta Teams Revealed

The Tour of Alberta presented by ATB Financial, September 2 – 7, 2015, announced 11 teams today, rounding out the final roster of 16 teams for Canada’s most prestigious cycling race.

Trek Factory Racing, registered in the U.S., briefly held the leader’s jersey of the Tour de France this month, and Bora Argon18, another Tour de France entrant, will join previously announced World Tour teams Orica-GreenEdge of Australia, Team Giant-Alpecin of Germany, Team Katusha of Russia, and Cannondale-Garmin of the United States. Drapac Pro Cycling, Australia’s top pro continental team, also was previously announced.

All three of Canada’s top professional teams Team Garneau-Quebecor, Silber Pro Cycling Team, and H & R Block Pro Cycling will join the race. Six additional teams, all based in the United States, round out the team roster, including Team SmartStop presented by Schneider Electric, Lupus Racing Team, Team Jelly Belly presented by Maxis, Hincapie Racing Team, Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies, and Axeon Cycling Team, directed by Canadian citizen Axel Merckx, an Olympic medalist and son of cycling legend, Eddy Merckx.

Team SmartStop is the squad of two of Canada’s top riders, Rob Britton, 10th overall in the 2015 Amgen Tour of California, and Zach Bell, the 2014 National Champion. Team Optum, which is one of the top-ranked continental teams, contains Ryan Anderson, an Alberta native who has won the past two Pomeroy Inn & Suites Best Canadian jerseys at the Tour of Alberta presented  by ATB Financial, and Guillaume Boivin, the 2015 National Champion.

“Without doubt, this is rounding out to be the best field in the three years of the event. We have six teams that are in the Tour de France currently and the top professional teams on the continent, all full of good young talent,” says Tour of Alberta presented by ATB Financial Executive Director, Duane Vienneau. “There is a rise in Canadian cycling talent that will be showcased this year, and we’re glad this race provides a major platform for them to compete against some of the world’s best.”

Rosters for the event will be announced in late August. The Tour of Alberta presented by ATB Financial, will serve a special purpose this year as the World Championships take place on North American soil for the first time since Hamilton in 2003, as Richmond, Va., U.S.A. plays host to that global event in late September.

“We’ve had extra-ordinary demand from teams wanting to compete in this year’s Tour of Alberta,” added Vienneau. “That’s due to a combination of factors, including the growth of the event, the solid reputation we’ve built, and a prelude to the World Championships.”
