Details Announced for Canada’s Largest Annual Professional Cycling Festival

Watching the world’s best cyclists compete is the most likely reason to watch the Tour of Alberta presented by ATB Financial; however, it’s certainly not the sole draw for spectators attending the event September 2 – 7, 2015.

Throughout the week, a festival will be set up at each start and finish stage that will showcase unique aspects of each particular region.

The City of Grande Prairie’s Pomeroy Inn & Suites Stage 1 festivities will kick-off the 2015 Tour at the Eastlink Centre on Wednesday, September 2. The wildly popular ‘Bubble Bump’ soccer and gold panning are amongst the lineup of activities for spectators to enjoy. Children can also look forward to face painting and glitter tattoos, bounce houses, a bike rodeo, and a petting zoo.  There will also be food trucks on-site and live music and dancing featuring reggae group Tasman Jude, whose first full length album debuted at #1 on the iTunes reggae charts, aboriginal dance troupe Bluebird dancers, and Kristopher Davis.

On Thursday, September 3, the SUBWAY ® Stage 2 festival at Evergreen Park in the County of Grande Prairie will feature horse and wagon rides, a seniors’ tea, a corn maze ‘selfie station’, and a bike rodeo. Cow trains for the little ones, petting zoo, bounce houses, bike rodeo, and face painting and glitter tattoos are amongst the highlights for families to enjoy. Musical acts include Trin James, Renee Golemba, and CCMA nominated country artist, Curtis Grambo.

In both the City and County of Grande Prairie, spectators can test out a BMX pump track with expert bikers, a snowboard rig, and a mobile fossil ‘dig’ led by the Phillip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum.

The Go Auto Stage 3 on Friday, September 4 will begin in Grande Cache supported by the Municipal District of Greenview with a pancake breakfast. Spectators can also anticipate a family scavenger hunt, chalk art, roaming mascots, a spin bike challenge. Activities are also planned for the evening prior as an unofficial-warmup for the Go Auto Stage 3 happening the next morning.

The town of Jasper has two days filled with excitement during both the Go Auto Stage 3 finish on September 4, and the Edmonton International Airport Stage 4 on Saturday, September 5. Not only will spectators be able to enjoy activities, food, and entertainment, but there will also be an opportunity to view the race with commentary on a jumbotron big-screen at the CN Jasper Festival. Additionally, great entertainment acts include hula hoop dancers, a magician, Pinoy band, and indie-folk rock band Scenic Route to Alaska. On Saturday morning, spectators can look forward to “Yoga in the Park” with Marla Pollock, a pancake breakfast in support of the MS Society put on by the Jasper Fire Department, a Festival Market, and kids’ bike races. The finish at Marmot Basin ski area will also have a jumbotron big-screen broadcasting the race, as well as a performance by folk-based rock band Wakeup Starlight and a barbeque by the Rotary Club of Jasper.

On Sunday, September 6, the Hotello by Pomeroy Stage 5 starts in Edson with a pancake breakfast, an exciting lineup of entertainment including a Pipe and Drum performance and a unicyclist, and activities for families like face painting stations, bounce houses, and balloon artists. The festival at the Spruce Grove finish features a pump track bicycle course, a Bike Trials stunt show, boot camp and spin bikes, a hand pedal bike race with Spruce Grove Mayor, Stuart Houston, and a children’s colouring contest. Spectators will enjoy entertainment by musical acts Captain Tractor and Hail Mary.

The final day on Monday, September 7 at the Delta Air Line Stage 6 Edmonton Festival begins with the ATB Financial Family Ride supporting CASA (Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health); this will be followed by a breakfast provided to all participants by Cora Restaurants. Following the public ride, the Edmonton Pipe and Drum band will perform. Edmonton-based businesses will provide activities, prizes and fun for all ages free of charge, including: an obstacle course for children/teens, some fitness tests and education opportunities for healthy living training by River Valley Health, Segway experiences and demonstrations by River Valley Adventure Co., and games with prizes of fresh fruit from SPUD. Children can look forward to a face painter’s tent and clowns that will be roaming the festival, engaging participants with balloons, stories and jokes. Cookie Love, A Cookie and Catering Company, by Edmonton based cookie creator, Mike Stone, will be creating a “Tour of Alberta” cookie, which will be available for purchase at the Festival. Edmonton Tourism’s giant, nine foot-tall letter “E” will also be on-site and provides the perfect photo opportunity for visitors to Edmonton. Bike racks and lock up facilities will be available for all who wish to ride their bikes down to Churchill Square.

Consistently across all festivals, spectators will find the Canadian Brewhouse Beer Gardens with beverages provided by Budweiser, the Subway Zone - where those who committed to fitness will enjoy a perfect view of the finish line and a greatly enhanced Tour of Alberta experience, and the EllisDon Autograph Alley, where fans can get up close and personal with their favourite riders.
