Municipal District of Opportunity launches tourism brand "100 Wild"

The Municipal District (MD) of Opportunity in Northern Alberta is making its mark in the tourism industry with the introduction of its new brand; 100% Wild.

“Our region is growing with additional business and it was time to start taking our tourism opportunities more seriously.  We are not only seeing an increase in the industrial activity to the region but also an increase in the tourism offerings and amenities available,” explains Tourism Coordinator Kristi Zufelt.

The launch of the is being paired with an enhanced social media presence and an online contest where participants can win “Wild Weekend” prize packages.

The concept “100% Wild” captures the essence of what Northern Alberta has to offer complete with pristine lakes, vast boreal wilderness and abundant wildlife.  “We’ve been working with the MD for the past six months in order to develop the concept, the brand and the face of the campaign.  The feeling here is slower paced, very rustic and the opportunities for people who are looking for a getaway into the wild are endless,” explains Seekers Media Destination Marketing Manager Megan Gibson. 

The MD of Opportunity offers nine large lakes in addition to dozens of smaller lakes which are ideal for boating, fishing, and paddling as well as five camping areas located at Calling Lake, Rock Island Lake, Wabasca, Peerless Lake, and Trout Lake.

“There are a few reasons this brand works so well for us; 100% Wild showcases the surrounding wilderness,” says Zufelt.  “The lakes and forests here are truly wild, making it easy to connect with the elements.  The brand also speaks to the abundance of wildlife, including bald eagles and bears.  Finally it’s about the experiences that are available to be found with friends and family, taking a moment to breathe in the fresh air and look around at the undeveloped shorelines.  The adventure in paddling or boating, when you look around and see no human development.  At times you do feel like you are the only ones out there, perhaps discovering these places for the first time.”

Every summer campers and outdoor adventure seekers flock to the MD of Opportunity and now with this increased brand presence, the MD of Opportunity is working to welcome even more visitors to the region.  Steve Wallmeer from Edmonton heard about the area through word of mouth and states, “I had an awesome time fishing on Callling Lake. It’s some of the best fishing I’ve had in Alberta.”
