Drumheller's DinoFest - A Roaring Succes

The town of Drumheller, Alberta is still in a festive mood after its inaugural DinoFest from the inaugural June 1-3 weekend.

“From all accounts, with low accommodation vacancy numbers to increased restaurant and attraction visitation, Drumheller’s DinoFest was a success,” says executive producer Jim Barr.

“We had our best day of business ever on the Saturday,” reports Dennis Standage owner of Sublime Restaurant and Bar, who were popular participants of The Taste of the Valley – a “festival within the festival”- showcasing a collection of Drumheller’s and the surrounding areas restaurants.  “We couldn’t keep up with the demand, we had to run back to the restaurant four times to re-stock over the three hours of the event because we kept selling out,” said Standage.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum experienced an almost 7% increase in its attendance compared to this time last year while the World’s Largest Dinosaur saw a 12% increase.  Hotels and campgrounds were sitting between 60-95% occupancy level. “Our attendance estimates are around 5,400 people over the Friday night, Saturday and Sunday of the event,” says Barr.

Comments on Facebook continue from both locals and tourists who were impressed with the festival.  "A BIG thank you to all who volunteered or contributed to Dinofest this year, it was the best thing Drumheller has ever put on!  So much work and effort to make it happen and I'm grateful to all involved!! My kids had a BLAST! :)," said Facebook user Carla Hamilton.

In its first year the annual festival has attracted major attention and appears to be a social media hit with its Facebook page having reached just over 725,000 people in the past three weeks.  Sponsors included Canalta Hotels, ATB Financial, Encana, FestivalSeekers, CKUA and was in partnership with Travel Alberta.  Outside of the major sponsors Drumheller’s DinoFest had 48 local businesses involved and a team of 28 volunteers.

Drumheller’s DinoFest presented by Canalta Hotels, is a unique dino themed festival.  Stay tuned for details on the 2013 event being announced in the near future.
