March 2015: Travel to Canada Hits the High Notes

With an 8% rise in visitor numbers, international travellers continued their love affair with Canada, according to new CTC Tourism Snapshot.

Canada continued to have an irresistible allure for international travellers in March 2015. More than 851,000 visitors crossed passport control, an 8% year-on-year-rise, reports the latest Tourism Snapshot from the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC)’s Research department.

More vital statistics:

  • CTC’s overseas markets continued their strong start to 2015, yielding a 11% rise in visitors to Canada in March 2015.
  • In the first quarter of 2015, more than 2.3 million international travellers came to Canada, up 7% over 2014.
  • March 2015 proved an excellent month for the US market, which posted a 7% year-on-year rise in visitor numbers.
  • The ongoing appreciation of the US greenback over the loonie—12.5% in 2015’s first quarter—helps add to Canada’s appeal for our American neighbours.
  • The Brits are back in town: the UK market enjoyed a 23% rise in travellers crossing the Atlantic to Canada in March 2015. Last year, Easter took place in late April 2014, causing a relative contraction in the market in March.
  • Elsewhere in CTC’s European markets, Germany registered a 6% uptick in visitor numbers, but there was a 10% decline from France.
  • It was 11th heaven for the Mexico market, which notched an astonishing 38% year-on-year rise in visitor numbers. Like the UK market, an earlier Easter holiday boosted numbers in contrast with 2014.
  • All news was good news from CTC’s Asian markets in March 2015, with China (24%), South Korea (8%), India (4%) and Japan (2%) posting increased levels of visitation to Canada.
  • Awesome foursome: the Australia, Brazil, China and India markets registered their highest ever Q1 visitor numbers in 2015.
  • CTC’s secondarymarkets had mixed results in March 2015. Arrivals increased from Hong Kong (35%), Taiwan (25%), Italy (+15%) and Spain (5%), but dipped from the Netherlands (-7%) and Switzerland (-0.1%).
  • Canadians made 3.4 million trips abroad in March 2015, down 0.8% on the previous year.
  • With the loonie suffering by comparison with the US dollar, Canadians made 8% more trips to overseas destinations in March 2015.
  • Despite the economy decelerating, Canadians had renewed faith in March 2015. The Index of Consumer Confidence, released by The Conference Board of Canada, climbed 12.9 points to 108.5.    
  • Americans also felt surer of themselves in March 2015. The Conference BoardConsumer Confidence Index rose 2.6 points to 101.4.
