Call for presentations - Winter Cities Shake Up Conference

You are invited to submit proposals for presentations for the Winter Cities Shake Up Conference in Edmonton, January 28-30, 2015. Submission deadline is October 15, 2014.

Are you doing something special to embrace winter that you’d like to share?

Winter Cities Shake Up is an international conference that will shake up the preconceptions about how we plan, design, live, work, and play in winter cities. It is a gathering of urban planners and designers, entrepreneurs and business people, artists, cultural and community organizers, and people who live in winter cities and want to take advantage of all winter has to offer.

Winter Cities Shake-Up 2015 offers the opportunity to share learnings, best practices and brainstorming sessions on strategies to make winter living easier and more fun in urban centres. From the workplace to the streetscape, to encouraging residents to take pride in their cities year round, Winter Cities Shake-Up 2015 has something for everyone interested in celebrating winter life.

Presentations should showcase how we can celebrate life in a winter city. We want to hear about your new research and best practices, creative projects and initiatives, and bold ideas that will shake up the way we’ve traditionally done things in a winter city. We want to learn from groups who are using winter as an asset.

Conference topics:

  • Winter Urban Design,Planning & Architecture
  • Winter Festivals & Urban Culture
  • Winter Technology, Business & Industry
  • Winter Transportation

Conference Themes:

  • Winter Business: How can cities build robust 'winter' economies?  Do you have a business or industry that works with the natural environment; taking advantage of all that the winter season has to offer? Does your business model capitalize on winter? Could it be adapted by other businesses and industries? How do we market winter cities as unique toursim destinations and great places to live, work and play?

  • Winter Design: How do we design for winter rather than around it? We are looking for great examples of architecture, urban design and planning in northern cities.  How did you approach your design? What made it different? What was the outcome?

  • Winter Fun: Inspiring a love of winter within cities and encouraging residents to join in the fun and magic of the season can be a challenge. We would like to see new ideas and strategies for embracing winter and bringing communities together to celebrate the season’s activities. What new activities have you created? How have you inspired people to join in?
