DER Touristik Campus Live comes to Alberta for the first time ever

With German visitation to Alberta continuing to grow, Travel Alberta, Alberta DMOs and industry partners recently hosted the prestigious DER Touristik Campus Live event in Calgary and Banff. Held for the first time in North America, DER Touristik provided a unique chance to showcase Alberta to travel agents from one of the leading travel and tourism groups in Germany.

From September 27 to October 5, Alberta and DER Touristik welcomed 110 industry professionals including top travel agents, key tourism partners from Germany, Austria and neighbouring countries to Alberta. A total of 87 travel agents were selected from German tour operators such as DERTOUR, Meier‘s Weltreisen and ADAC Reisen.

The 87 travel agents started their Alberta experience by participating in five pre-FAM tours throughout various regions around the province including Edmonton, Jasper, Banff, Calgary, Waterton, Canmore, Kananaskis and Drumheller.  The FAMs travelled by RV, rental cars and motor coach around Alberta to experience a variety of the modes of transportation throughout Alberta.  While exploring Alberta on the FAMs they travelled by horseback, rafts, trams, boats, gondolas and Segways. They saw scenery and wildlife, experienced Alberta culture and history, tasted Alberta craft beer and dined on Alberta cuisine and stayed in newly opened hotels.

The FAMS wrapped up on October 2 and all participants convened as a group in Banff for three days at the main Campus Live event in Banff and Calgary from October 2-5. The main event included a series of workshops and round tables where tourism partners gave presentations to small groups of agents who then rotated to each partner throughout the day. The goal of these workshops and round tables was to provide advanced training and knowledge of Alberta product to help sell and promote Alberta vacations. In addition to the workshops and round tables, excursions took place in both Banff and Calgary to experience a wide variety of year round and shoulder season product as well as culinary and evening events.

“DER Touristik Campus Live Alberta 2016 provided Travel Alberta, Alberta DMOs and Alberta industry partners the opportunity to showcase destinations throughout the province, highlight the wide variety of product that is available and allowed this frontline group of sellers to experience Alberta first hand. The timing allowed us to speak to Alberta as a four season destination, highlight a variety of destinations and provide the Alberta industry with the opportunity to promote their product.

This event was a collaboration of Travel Alberta DMOs including Banff & Lake Louise Tourism and Tourism Calgary who hosted the Campus Live main event as well as pre-FAMs.  Edmonton Tourism and Tourism Jasper also hosted pre-FAMs.  There were also a number of Alberta industry partners who supported the FAMs and excursions to make this event a true success.

The Travel Alberta team in Germany will continue to work closely with DER Touristik after the event to harvest the opportunity to ensure the travel agents who experienced Alberta are sharing their knowledge and excitement for Alberta and turning their experiences into sales. During the coming weeks Travel Alberta will collect feedback from the participants regarding their experiences to determine the impact of the event. And, during the coming months, to the impact of sales to clients.  

This event was a year in the making and involved significant planning that took place 6 months prior to launch.
