Opportunities await for tourism investors

Looking to get into Alberta’s tourist attraction market? The Alberta government is releasing three booklets that highlight tourism investment opportunities in Alberta’s Mighty Peace, Northwest and Southwest regions. The booklets are designed to encourage businesses and private sector developers to develop and invest in 32 tourism attractions over the next three years.

Developed in partnership with local municipalities and economic development and tourism associations, the three booklets provide high-level business case assessments, including proposed costs and projected revenues, for multiple investment opportunities across the province. In addition to being available online, the booklets will be distributed through investment forums, missions and meetings that link opportunities with potential investors.

Proposed opportunities in the three regions include RV and tent campground developments, riding stables, downhill ski facilities, nature lodges, a bed and breakfast, and eco resorts. Many opportunities promote conservation education, and encourage visits to provincial and national parks, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

“From quiet lakeside campgrounds to world-class mountain resorts, tourism is a major draw for Alberta,” says Richard Starke, Minister, Tourism, Parks and Recreation. “These booklets will help businesses tap into the province’s potential as a leading tourism destination, allowing visitors to take in new experiences while providing our communities with more jobs and an economic boost.”

Mighty Peace
The Mighty Peace Region has developed a successful tourism infrastructure that is becoming increasingly known for outdoor adventure activities. Current investment opportunities include cabin developments, a birding lodge, and expansions to a local golf course and ski area.

“It’s very exciting to see the possibilities for tourism development in our region. Now that the ideas are laid out in the booklet, we can attract investment to make it happen,” says Rhonda Davidson, President of the Mighty Peace Tourist Association. “I’m particularly pleased with the range in size of opportunities outlined, so both local and external investment are feasible.”

The Northwest Region offers investors a range of opportunities that build on its proximity to wilderness areas and agricultural land, and its mosaic of English, French, Mennonite, First Nations and Métis cultures. Among them are a tourism base camp and research station, agricultural education hostel and cultural learning centre.

“Along with our municipal and industry partners, we are very excited about the release of the Northwest Alberta tourism investment booklet,” says Chris MacLeod, Chair of the Regional Economic Development Initiative Association for Northwest Alberta (REDI). “We have invested significant resources to promote tourism in our region and believe we have a wealth of untapped potential.”

Tourism in the Southwest Region is closely linked to the mountains, historic landmarks and western heritage. Investment opportunities range from ski and RV resort expansions to a zipline course and a shooting facility that lets visitors take part in cowboy-style competitions. “Our communities have been working together to create a welcoming and supportive business environment,” says Lloyd Kearl, Deputy Reeve of Cardston County and Chair of the Alberta SouthWest Regional Economic Development Alliance. “We are pleased to have an information package to help tell the story of our region and the many opportunities that exist here.”
