Travel Alberta is working with research firm Leger Marketing Inc. to conduct a series of online surveys to understand the impact of the pandemic on Alberta tourism businesses and help guide strategy and support programs.

This research is based on a phased approach in alignment with different stages of the pandemic. Phase 1 of the survey was executed in April 2020 during the first shutdown. Results can be found here. Phase 2 was carried out in October 2020, five months following the launch of Alberta' Relaunch Strategy. Results can be found here.

Phase 3 occurred April 29-May 26, 2021, during a provincial lockdown to stop the spread of the virus through the third wave of the pandemic. The 268 businesses that responded provided Travel Alberta with key insights into how our industry is coping with the pandemic.

Overall, 89 per cent of tourism businesses have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 (unchanged from phase 2). Since phase two of the Business Impact Survey in the fall of 2020, significantly more businesses have reduced their service offering"”a reflection of continued border and health restrictions in place at the time.

The detailed data collected in the survey is crucial in helping to inform our strategy moving forward.
