The newly opened Skyridge Glamping offers a shining example of how luxury tourism can coexist with sustainability. It now serves as a gateway for adult travellers seeking an elevated, eco-conscious experience in Alberta’s backcountry and marks one of the first developments in Kananaskis in over 20 years.
The Opportunity
Chrystel Postel, CEO of Ridgeback Glamping, saw extraordinary potential in Alberta’s Kananaskis region. Captivated by the province’s breathtaking natural landscapes and the opportunity to create an immersive outdoor hospitality experience, she made the bold decision to sell her original glamping site in New Brunswick and relocate her business to Alberta.
In addition to the region’s appeal for outdoor recreation and wellness tourism, Postel was drawn to Alberta’s welcoming business climate. She recognized the province as a place where innovation and entrepreneurship are actively supported, where regulatory and investment frameworks are increasingly aligned with sustainable tourism development, and where collaboration between the private sector and government agencies can lead to real results.
Developing in the ecologically sensitive Bow Valley posed regulatory and logistical challenges. To bring her vision for Skyridge to life, Travel Alberta provided comprehensive support, including:
- Guidance through government application processes and environmental regulations. This included working with decision-makers to help them understand the project, and encourage timely decision-making.
- Assistance with Indigenous engagement
- Strategic introductions to key stakeholders and local decision-makers
- A formal letter of support for the project
- Support navigating funding programs and tourism development tools
