The Foothills region of Southern Alberta is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes, unique small-town charm, and farm-to-table cuisine. And, perhaps most importantly, the area provides a gateway for travellers and locals alike to experience Alberta’s central Rockies in Banff, Canmore, Kananaskis, and beyond.

River Retreat Kananaskis, offering boutique accommodations located at the gateway to Kananaskis Country, is a shining example of the potential of this region for tourism operators, investors, locals, and travellers alike.

Established in 2020 by Jaxy and Todd Broadbent, River Retreat Kananaskis was born from a vision of creating something extraordinary to honour and enjoy the serenity of its location. Nestled along the scenic Highwood River and just five minutes from Kananaskis Country, this unique retreat stands out in a region where accommodations have historically been scarce.

The Broadbents’ passion and dedication have transformed River Retreat Kananaskis into more than just a place to stay—it’s an experience. With diverse offerings that include camping, glamping, or boutique guest rooms in the lodge to weddings or a local culinary experience in their conservatory, the retreat has become a gateway for travellers seeking to experience Kananaskis’ natural beauty. The business has also created the opportunity for new itineraries for travel trade and international media to promote to travellers abroad, expanding and diversifying the travel experiences they can showcase to a global audience.

Travel Alberta supported River Retreat Kananaskis in expanding its offerings from RV camping to year-round boutique cabin accommodations, designed to appeal to both international travellers and local outdoor enthusiasts. Destination development manager Cameron Spence also provided business coaching and other support to help River Retreat Kananaskis tap into larger traveller itineraries, from the Foothills region through to the Rockies.

The uniqueness about the experience out here is its location. It's not a busy place. It's not like so many tourist areas are filled with people. You can't find that solitude. You can't find that quiet and tranquility that we offer out here. That's definitely one of the most unique things we offer.

Businesses like River Retreat Kananaskis play a crucial role in meeting the rising demand for accommodations in less-frequented spots throughout the province. They enrich the visitor experience, diversify Alberta’s tourism offerings, and foster the sustainable growth of the region’s tourism ecosystem. Travel Alberta’s ongoing investment in such ventures is a testament to the value these businesses bring—not just in drawing more travellers, but in driving economic development and elevating Alberta’s profile on the world stage.

For the Broadbents, River Retreat Kananaskis is a dream realized. For Alberta, it’s a glimpse into the future of tourism in the Foothills region.
