What are categories and product types?

Categories are a system of data classification used to organize similar tourism offerings on the travelalberta.com website. The new ATIS platform has updated our categorization system to better capture Alberta’s wide variety of tourism offerings.

Each listing is assigned one category. Select the category that best describes your product from the following six options: Accommodations, Food and drink, Rentals and equipment, Things to do, Transportation and Visitor information.

Product types are subcategories used to further organize and enhance a visitor’s experience. The new ATIS allows you to choose up to three product types which site visitors can use to filter their search. There are 165 options to choose from, and the list is growing to reflect Alberta’s increasing number of tourism experiences.

For example, if your business is called Hoodoos Trail Hike, its category might be “Things to do,” and its product types might be “Hiking,” “Biking” and “Backpacking.”

Where does my offering fit?

If you’re unsure how to define your offering, you’ll find a complete list of categories and product types below.

What if my listing’s category is incorrect?

If you created a listing on the old ATIS platform, our team has already assigned it a category.

If the new category does not accurately reflect your business, you can update it using the steps below.

How to change a category or type

  1. Sign in to your ATIS account
  2. Navigate to your Dashboard
    • On desktop, select My Listings at the left of your screen
    • On mobile, click the three-line icon next to your Profile in the upper right corner of your screen, then select My Listings
  3. Select the listing you’d like to update
  4. In the Basic Info section, click the Edit button next to Category to update the information
  5. Once you’ve chosen a Category, click Continue
  6. Select up to three Product Types
    • If none of them fit your tourism offering, select None of these accurately describe my product
  7. Click Save Changes
    • After updating your tourism offering, you must re-submit your listing for review. The Travel Alberta team will review your submission within 72 hours and email you about its approval.

What if nothing accurately describes my product?

The Travel Alberta team is committed to continuously enhancing ATIS's functionality, guided by user and partner feedback. ATIS includes built-in prompts that will allow you to suggest new product types while creating your listing.

If none of the available product types accurately describe your offering, you can let us know by using the prompts or contacting our team at atissupport@travelalberta.com.

What if my tourism listing crosses multiple categories?

If your tourism listing fits into multiple categories, choose the main or most suitable category that best describes your offering.

Some tourism businesses offer multiple services or experiences. If you have multiple tourism products, you should create a new listing to represent each. Separate listings allow you to showcase more of your offerings and reach more travellers.

For example, a hotel with a restaurant would be best represented by two listings—one in the “Accommodation” category and a second in the “Food and drink” category. Creating multiple listings helps more travellers discover your content, doubling your chance of exposure.
