Tourism Week - May 24-31

Each year, Travel Alberta leverages the power of Tourism Week to connect with our industry partners and promote tourism’s contribution to the economy. In these tough times, it is more important than ever to recognize your ingenuity, resilience and dedication to your customers and communities.

Throughout Tourism Week, Travel Alberta will continue to showcase Alberta tourism organizations and businesses that have been “doing differently” in the age of COVID-19.

We have also been reaching out on our social media channels to invite your thoughts on the importance of our industry and how we can work together to get through the pandemic. We are going to wrap it all up in a video for release during Tourism Week. Here is a sneak peek and there is still time to participate. Be sure to visit our Tourism Week webpage for more details about this and other ways you can get involved.

We are also offering three virtual events for partners during Tourism Week:

  • Alberta Tourism Town Hall on Thursday, May 28 – 1:00-2:30 p.m.
In partnership with the Tourism Industry Association of Canada and Destination Canada, the program will focus on COVID-19 response and direction for our industry. Register now for the 2020 Alberta Tourism Town Hall
  • Two Connections Live webinars:
    • Team Alberta Messaging to Restart Tourism in Alberta on Tuesday, May 26 – 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Travel Alberta’s Tannis Gaffney, Vice President, Global Consumer Marketing, will present the elements of this messaging and promotional approach, designed to create responsible inspiration to travel within the province this summer, and share how partners can adapt the messaging to communicate with your customers.
    • Alberta’s Economy in a COVID-19 World, hosted by Todd Hirsch, Chief Economist at ATB Financial on Thursday, May 28 – 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Todd will take you through the economic impact of COVID-19 on Alberta and help answer the burning question “what now?”

Registration for both webinars opens this Thursday, May 21.

In the meantime, register now for our latest webinar on research and insights to help guide Alberta’s tourism recovery.

We hope you will join us in celebrating our industry during Tourism Week, as we continue working together to get through this. Brighter days are ahead as tourism related businesses start safely reopening and Albertans get back to adventuring in our beautiful province this summer.

Alberta Relaunch Strategy Update

These past two historical months have been extremely difficult for our industry and we are encouraged by the Government of Alberta’s Relaunch Strategy.

Phase one came into effect on May 14, with a more gradual relaunch in Calgary and Brooks due to higher COVID-19 case numbers. This is a time when steady and safely is the way to go.

As we continue to connect with many of you, we know there are lots of questions about the health and safety guidelines in place to protect visitors and employees during the phased reopening of the Alberta economy. The government has launched Alberta BizConnect to help you navigate our new normal and reopen safely during the pandemic.

Travel Alberta has added a new Workplace Guidance for Businesses section to the COVID-19 Industry Partner Toolkit. It includes links to important government information as well as toolkits and resources from industry associations and other partners.

Continuing Support for Industry

Businesses can now apply for the Regional Relief and Recovery Fund, delivered by Western Economic Diversification Canada and other regional development agencies across the country. A total of $304.2 million has been allocated for Western Canada and is available to businesses that were unable to access support through the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA).
