Tourism Calgary is Calgary’s Destination Marketing Organization. Representing the visitor industry in Calgary, the City of Calgary, more than 600-member companies and its key partner – The Calgary Hotel Association and DMF Hotels. Tourism Calgary takes Calgary to the world and with its partners brings the world to Calgary for meetings and conventions, leisure travel, and sport, culture and major events. Tourism in Calgary annually contributes over $1.4 billion in economic impact to local economy.  
 
THE POSITION 

Exciting opportunities are available this summer with Tourism Calgary’s In-Destination Roaming Team. Reporting to the Specialist, In-Destination Services, this role will assist with the execution of the in-destination roaming strategy. Responsibilities will include assisting the roaming team in proactively engaging visitors/locals to raise awareness of what to see and do in Calgary and area at various high-traffic areas in Calgary, relationship building with Calgary’s frontline community and creating awareness on in-destination strategies, help execute festival and events info booths, along with set-up and tear-down. Successful candidates will work closely with the Specialist, In-Destination to determine goals and work plan.     
 
TERM 

This position is a non-paid internship that would occur ideally part-time May – August based on candidates’ availability and requirements. This internship is part of a formal educational program and applicants must be required to fulfill a designated number of hours for their required courses. 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Provide “exceptional” level of customer service.
• Liaise with the Specialist, In-Destination and Lead, In-Destination as required.   
• Support the in-destination roaming strategy; Proactively approach, engage and assist visitors and locals in a friendly and professional way, enhancing their experience in Calgary by providing trip planning serving as an ambassador for Calgary
• Track all data on visitors and locals engaged, including current location, in Salesforce in a timely and accurate way. 
• Stay current on local accommodation options, places to visit, events, festivals, restaurants, new businesses, transit disruptions, etc.   
• Collaborate with roaming team to achieve team referrals and engagements; be actively involved in problem solving and propose improvements to processes.
• Assist in planning and execution of live updates on social media platforms. 
• Assist in set-up/tear-down at events and in daily operations when required. 
• Build relationships with frontline personnel at key visitor touchpoints creating awareness of indestination roaming services and other strategies. 
• Provide updates on Chatter; summarize common themes/trends in weekly reports.
• Ensure downtown brochure distribution points are organized, stocked and up-to-date.
• Attend regular meetings with Specialist, In-Destination as required. 
• Attend Tourism Calgary functions, events, presentations and training opportunities when required.
• Performs other duties as required. 

 
QUALIFICATIONS
• Enrolled in tourism or hospitality post-secondary program, or a related field. 
• Exceptional customer service, communication and interpersonal skills. 
• Possess a positive attitude, outgoing demeanor, and a strong willingness to help others.
• Strong knowledge of Calgary and surrounding area, including tourism products. 
• Ability to work independently as well as an effective team member. 
• Strong organization and time-management skills. 
• Must be able to build and maintain relationships via telephone, e-mail, and in-person. 
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Docs; familiarity with IOS devices, reporting tools and database experience.   
• Familiarity of social media and related platforms (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat).   
• Experience with Alberta’s tourism industry and tourism destinations, as well as ability to speak multiple languages, are considered assets.  
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
Due to the nature of tourism industry, must be flexible to work on weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.  
 
Position includes bike riding with an attached mobile unit or cargo bike daily, and standing up to 8.5 hours per shift (with breaks). Setting up pop-up materials, lifting of brochure boxes and equipment up to 55lbs will be required. Position requires working primarily outdoors.   
 
Includes occasional transportation in a rental vehicle to key sites in Calgary or surrounding regional destinations if needed.
